Into my 3.8 swap.

Step one is to get all the sensors and fuel rail swapped so it will run on my wiring/ecm. So that means stripping the old motor:

Then I set into swapping things onto the new motor. I started with the water pump, engine mount bracket, and cam sensor:

With that done I’m ready to start tearing into the top end.

Debating whether or not I want to do head gaskets while its on the stand. I don’t really want to tear it down that far, but I don’t want to have to do it in the van either. They’re not really a common failure point on the 3.8s, so Idk.

Yes, do head gaskets now, it’ll take an hour and cost $20 now vs. busting your knuckles for three hours later

Oh, this is a Long Voyager post, it'll take 15 minutes now vs. 45 in the car.

Might as well, I mean it’s not like there are any overhead cams in the way, right?

If I’m being totally honest, I much prefer doing HGs on my SOHC 3.0s than doing them on these pushrod V6s. Once the timing belt is off, you can remove the heads as a unit, whereas the pushrod motors require you to remove the rockers, then remove/label each pushrod before you can pull the heads.

How do the timing covers factor in? You have to remove it on the SOHCs , right? B ut not on the pushrod motors, I’m guessing ?

Have to pull the engine mount bracket off the front of the engine on both motors, which is harder to do on the 3.3/3.8 than the 3.0. The 3.0 has a timing cover, but it’s plastic and held on by a handful of 10 mm bolts, it takes 30 secs to remove. Once that’s off, loosen the tensioner, slide the belt off, and the heads are ready to come off.
